Luggage Limits and Procedures

Remember, your luggage is your responsibility. Keep track of your luggage at all times and stick to the guidelines below to ensure a smooth journey to your SU Abroad destination.
Luggage Limits
Airlines, not SU Abroad, set the luggage allowances for international flights. On most international carriers, you will be permitted to take three pieces of luggage: two checked bags and one carry-on. Your bags will have to conform to certain size and weight restrictions. If you are flying with us, exact information about baggage will be included in the final departure information sheet sent out a few weeks prior to departure.
Your two pieces of checked luggage cannot exceed a total dimension of 62 inches (height + width + length). The maximum weight allowable for any one piece of checked luggage is 70 pounds. Your carry-on must fit under your seat or in the overhead bins.
Large Items/Excess Luggage
No surprises at the airport, please. If you plan to bring bicycles, guitars, skis or surfboards, you must contact the airline in advance. Be prepared to substitute this item for one of your pieces of checked luggage or pay an excess luggage charge.
Check-In Procedure for Group Flights
If you have a connecting flight at a New York airport, do not check your luggage through to your final destination. You will not receive your airline ticket until you have completed group check-in, so you will need to wait to re-check your luggage. If your luggage is lost or delayed, notify the SU Abroad flight escort and they will assist you
Once you have completed group check-in, you will check your luggage to your final destination.
Upon Arrival
Upon arrival overseas, retrieve your bags and proceed through customs. (This will be the first of many tests to see if you can carry your own luggage all at once!) Syracuse University representatives will be outside of customs to meet the group flight. Be sure to personally deliver your luggage to the waiting buses or trucks for transport to the SU Abroad center.
If your program begins with a field seminar (France, Hong Kong, Beijing and Spain), you still must retrieve all of your luggage and take it through customs. Once you have cleared customs, look for our local staff. They will direct you to buses for the final legs of your journey.
