Congratulations to our Spring ’15 Gilman Scholarship Awardees!

Ten SU Abroad Students Receive Funding

Eight Syracuse University students taking part in SU study abroad programs next spring won Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships and were awarded an amount totaling $33,500.

Gilman scholarships, which are available to United States citizens receiving federal financial aid, are awarded to students traditionally underrepresented in study abroad, including students from diverse ethnic backgrounds, those with high financial need, first-generation college students, and students with disabilities.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Cultural Affairs, the Gilman scholarship program awards up to $5,000 for a semester of study.  An additional $3,000 can be awarded to students studying a “critical language” abroad, such as Mandarin Chinese or Turkish (Syracuse University has centers in Beijing, China and Istanbul, Turkey.)

The Spring 2015 Syracuse awardees are:

  • Elijah Crago (SU London)
  • Violet Curiel (SU Santiago)
  • Adriana Jimenez (SU Istanbul)
  • Anjani Ladhar (World Partner: University of New South Wales)
  • Bappy Nath (SU Hong Kong)
  • Wilson Tran (SU Hong Kong)
  • Shaheem Valentin (SU Santiago)
  • Azada Wan (SU London)

In addition, two students from other colleges and universities who are attending SU Abroad programs received awards for Spring 2015. They are:

  • Laura Jimenez, Babson College (SU Florence)
  • Dylan Hoey, Claremont McKenna College (SU Istanbul)
