This course starts with an overview of traditional cameras, lenses, settings, exposure for a smooth transition to JPEG, TIFF, importing, storing and printing. Photoshop software is used as an “editing” digital darkroom, with an emphasis on cropping, contrast, curves and levels, color adjustment, scanning and printing. Design basics are the structure of the visual part: playing with light, perspective, frame, and shape. Students must provide their own digital camera with manual settings (better SLR cameras).
Course-related fee: A fee will be billed from Syracuse to cover the costs of certain supplies and Florence site visits (2017–2018 fee = $290). Note: Biennially, Fall semester students may opt to participate in a trip to Venice for the Biennale with an additional fee payable in Florence with a credit card.
