What are the creative industries and how do they contribute to the lives of Londoners and the economy of the capital city and nation? This course combines site visits and guest speakers with classroom work, drawing on methods from business studies, cultural history, cultural studies, media studies, sociology, and semiotics.
Through innovative assignments, students learn to “connect the dots” as they explore: What is creativity and how is it channelled into and exploited by markets? How has creative labour and consumption in London’s economy evolved over time? What identities do people form through engaging with London’s creative industries? How has Britain’s long industrial and artisanal traditions impacted today’s creative industries, and how do they fit within the global knowledge economy? How do the growing inequalities of British society manifest in London’s creative landscape?
