SPA480.2 Spanish Language: Varieties of Spanish (at UAM)

Taught in Spanish. Introduction to the analysis of the linguistic variation of Spanish and fundamental aspects of variation of peninsular Spanish as well as Spanish of the Canaries and America. Topics include:

  • Linguistic varieties. Language, dialect, idiolect, and the standardization of languages
  • Dialectal methodology and types of linguistic variation: spatial and social variation
  • Geographical areas of peninsular Spanish: Andalucía, and Spanish in bilingual peninsular regions
  • History and general characteristics of the Spanish of America
  • Dialect areas in the Spanish of America, unity and diversity, supranational, national, regional and local standards
