TXT280.3 Woven Design I (Fall, Spring)

An introduction to weaving with four harness looms and tapestry weaving. Samples and and projects include exploring the basic weave structure, utilizing various twills and pattern threading as well as hand-manipulated techniques, such as knotting, leno, pickup, inlay and tapestry weaving. Fabric analysis and basic textile technology will also be covered. Assignments focus on the exploration of two- and three-dimensional forms in preparation for versatile approaches to woven media as applied to fine arts as well addressing issues in contemporary industrial design. Students may need or want to purchase materials more appropriate to individual selection (such as specialty yarns and dyes).

Open to students admitted to the Studio Arts Program or by permission of the instructor and on a space available basis.

Course-related fee: A fee will be billed from Syracuse to cover the costs of basic studio supplies (2017–2018 fee = $105).
