WGS380.41 Politics of Gender

This course aims to analyze and critically assess various forms of exclusion, discrimination and obstacles to women’s participation in the political sphere. We will discuss how and why politics is gendered as well as the efforts in making this exclusion explicit and changing it in the direction of better representation and more participation in social and political life. Thus, we will analyze women’s participation in politics as well as the politics of women’s issues. Students will gain an understanding of these issues within a broader theoretical framework of gender inequality, with a special focus on the obstacles to women’s equal participation in political and social life in Turkey.
