HUM300.2 : Southeast Asia: Past, Present and Future
Description:
With the increasing economic and political confidence of the nations of the region, Southeast Asia is exerting significant influence on world affairs. In some countries, such as Singapore, this influence is largely economic, with its huge economy and large holdings of reserves and foreign investments. In other countries, such as Malaysia, the cultural diversity and acceptance of multiple religions and traditions is an example of moderation and tolerance. Thailand continues to be a vibrant economy continuing its ancient traditions of independence and vigorous politics. Strategically, Southeast Asia is also of vital importance due to the large energy reserves in Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia, and a major refining and processing center in Singapore. This 9-day seminar features on-site lectures and visiting speakers in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand that will give students a wide appreciation of the cultural, historical, political, economic and strategic situation of Southeast Asia. Can also be registered as IRP 300.2.
Required for fall 2008 Hong Kong participants. An optional 4-day study tour with academic assignments during Module B allows students to earn an additional one credit with registration under Independent Study. Students who do not enroll in the Beijing option can also earn an additional credit, with registration under Independent Study, by undertaking a project or paper related to a topic introduced during the seminar and approved by the seminar leader.
