FIA400.1 : Ancient Art & Society:Etruscans & Romans in Italy
Description:
This course explores art and society of ancient Italy from ca. 1000 B.C. to A.D. 138, with special emphasis on the early Etruscans through Rome under Hadrian. It provides students with an awareness of and appreciation for the major monuments of Etruscan and Roman art, architecture, and decorative arts, often placed in a broader cultural context. We examine examples of sculpture, painting, architecture, city-planning, and give particular attention to the topography of Rome and the archaeological excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum. Includes overnight trip to Pompeii/Herculaneum/Sorrento and day trip to Tarquinia/Cerveteri as well as local site visits. A course-related fee will be billed from Syracuse (2008-09 fee = $440).
Prereq: At least one course in art history or consent of the instructor required.
