FIA300.3 : Interpreting Images: Learning to Look at Italian Sculpture
Description:
This course provides an overview of the most important artistic developments in Italy with the focus on key works of Italian sculpture (most often studied in the original)from antiquity through the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods up to the 20th Century (Futurism and Arte Povera). Students learn how to "read" works of art from a range of perspectives: formal analysis, iconography, social, political, and economic contexts. Sculptors include Donatello, Michelangelo, Bernini, Canova, and many others. A course-related fee will be billed from Syracuse for an overnight trip to Modena/Verona, a day trip to Carrara and for site visits (2007-08 fee = $295). No previous art history study required.
