ART300.2 : Mediterranean Odyssey: Exploring the Roots of Western Civilization in Greece, Sicily, and Rome

Description:

This 10-day travelling seminar probes the ancient theme of discovery while students make the passage from the Aegean to Sicily to the Italic peninsula. Students will explore the ancient Greek and Sicilian roots of Roman and contemporary Italian culture. In the process they also will compare critically different moments in the Western artistic construction of self and society, in literature, theater, philosophy, art and architecture, from the archaic period through to the end of the Roman Empire.
