Course Description

HST404 : Family and Gender in Renaissance Italy

Description:

In Renaissance Italy, gender determined an individual’s life and career as much as social class or economic status. Men’s career options lay in the public domain, where personal networks were as important as education and training. Women, regardless of class, had one "career" – marriage. This course looks at the family as a social institution where individuals were subordinated and controlled at the same time they were given protection and freedom. It also considers a number of alternative (even “dissident”) personal and professional life strategies which evolved during the Renaissance. A course fee of $65 (Spring 2008) will be billed from Syracuse to cover site visits in Florence. Cross-listed with ANT 404 and WSP 404.
