ARC500.1 : Italian Architecture, 1914-1991

Description:

The course deals with Italian architecture from the 1st World War to the Eighties. Starting with an introduction on Futurism, Metafisica and Retour à l’ordre, we will discuss architecture in Italy during the Twenties in Torino, Milano and Roma, then the beginning of Italian Rationalism, confronting the temporary Triennali Architectural Exibitions in Milano (1927-33) and the political content of architectural interventions in Rome. The discussion on the Fascist period will be concluded with a panorama of the public buildings in the Thirties: Train Stations, Post Offices, Fascist Party Buildings and the E42 (today EUR) urban district. The second part of the course starts with an introduction to the debate on tradition and modernity after WW 2, in order to present some main topics: Public Housing and Neighborhood Units (50’s), Architecture and the City (50’s and 60’s), New Proposals for Housing (60’s and 70’s), History and Architecture (Manfredo Tafuri and Aldo Rossi), Centre and Periphery in the Eighties. Overnight trip to Rome with a course-related fee billed from Syracuse (Fall 2007 fee = $120). Meets with FIA 500.1.
