HUM400.1 : China: Past, Present and Future

Description:

Required. A two-week seminar with lectures, discussions, and site visits in and around Kunming or Xi'an, Beijing, and Shanghai. The objective of the seminar is to give students an overview of social conditions in the PRC, so that they may begin their studies in Hong Kong with an understanding of the forces that shape people's lives in Greater China. The seminar will look at traditional Chinese culture, economic, political, and legal reform, women's issues, the environmental crisis, and U.S.-China relations. The itinerary will stress regional diversity and economic disparity, and the widening gulf between urban and rural China.
