Course Description

FIL360.5 : Contemporary Cinema, Ideology and Pleasures

Description:

What is a political film? Is the discourse displayed by the director through cinematic language easily “readable?” Do we, as viewers, share his or her ideology? How effective is film as a medium in stimulating a critique of the world? Two approaches to examine selected films: the socio-political method, and the semiological method, which attempts to explain how film communicates. Films range from American movies of the early 1960s to recent productions of some of the most “politically committed” international film-makers. Taught in English. A course-related fee will be billed from Syracuse for an overnight film festival trip (2008-09 fee = $370). Meets with LIT 400.5.
