GEO390 : Independent Study in Geography

Description:

This independent study focuses on a geographical approach to Chinese history and culture and is a combination of classroom lectures, field study and independent research. Human geography as a world view—spatial ideology, land concepts, people relations and social processes—play a fundamental role in Chinese history and culture. Chinese civilization and the ancient Chinese empire were established covering a huge space (territory), and the strategy for unifying various regions and the ideology for legitimating power over the "All under Heaven" may be understood through such traditional Chinese geographic concepts as Middle Kingdom, Nine Regions, Five Domains, Five Sacred Mountains. The content of the course includes an introduction to the basic knowledge of historical geography of China, such as the core area of the Chinese civilization, the key regions, the system of transportation, the relationship with the northern nomadic world, the history of the Great Walls, urban landscapes, the character of the Changan city of the Tang dynasty, the history of the Beijing city, the relationship between town and countryside, the change of social space, and the character of the cultural landscape.
