ARC398 : Architectural Concepts and Representation for Non-Majors

This course provides an introduction to architectural concepts and theory, and instruction in on-site sketching and analytical drawing. Weekly lectures on topics of architectural theory and history are intended to introduce the student to the range of significant ideas and concepts of architectural and urban form. Weekly field trips, both within and outside of Florence, constitute the primary activity of this course. The tours, site-visits and lectures focus on individual works of historic and contemporary architecture, and the role of the individual building within urban and landscape settings. Also examined are the urban structures and spaces that constitute city form, the rural landscape, villas and gardens. Instruction will be provided in the basic conventions of architectural sketching and analysis. The course aims to increase the students’ knowledge and awareness of these sites, and to enlarge the students’ capacity to see, understand, and critically evaluate architecture through sketching and drawing. While this is not an architectural history course, the history of sites and buildings visited will introduced through talks and readings to further an understanding of their morphology, place in history, and architectural significance. Syracuse University students who want to receive arts and sciences credit for this course may petition the Fine Arts Department prior to departure. Students pay a course fee of $898 for the field studies. This fee will be billed in Syracuse after registration.
