Istanbul, Turkey

Welcome to SU Istanbul!

Istanbul sits at the geographic, cultural, and political fulcrum between Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, and students at SU Istanbul will gain an incomparable vantage point for examining some of the most important issues of our time – from secularism and Islam, to democratization, security, minority and gender rights, and urban development. The city has been a veritable melting pot of cultures, traditions, and lifestyles stretching back over 2000 years. Based at Bahçeşehir University, the SU Istanbul program will introduce you to the city’s grand past and its exciting future. To get a feel for what life is like on campus, visit the SU Istanbul website .

The academic program in Istanbul combines the SU Abroad Signature Seminar and optional internships with the opportunity to take coursework in English alongside Turkish students and international peers at Bahçeşehir University. In addition to two required courses with SU Abroad faculty, most SU Istanbul students will enroll in three or four Bahçeşehir University courses.

Ask us about life in Istanbul!

As international educators, we continuously balance our commitment to engagement with the world with our responsibility for the safety of the students on our program. We know that students and their parents/guardians might have questions about the risks of study abroad.

We encourage you to talk with our Istanbul staff members about our safety procedures. If you’re considering a semester in Istanbul, we’d also be happy to set up a Skype meeting between you (or your parents) and our director Dr. Erika Wilkens (who lives in Istanbul and can give you a feeling for what the city is like on the ground). Students with questions about day-to-day living in the city of Istanbul can contact one of our global ambassadors.

Talk to recent SU Istanbul students!

The best way to understand what to expect in Istanbul is to talk to someone who has already participated in the program. Our Istanbul global ambassadors volunteered with refugees, made lifelong Turkish friends, and re-thought their biases about Turkey – ask them about Istanbul!
