Afro-Cuban Roots in Havana: Sacred Dance and Music: HOM 400/600 (1 credit) Learn to perform dance movements, drumming, and singing based in Cuba’s principal African-derived belief systems from renowned instructors. You will also visit Cuba’s National Folk Ensemble, go to the museum of Afro-Cuban culture at Guanabacoa, and take in two dance performances. Through these activities, you will understand the important role of African cultures in Cuba’s history and in its current society.
Exploring Cuban Culture through Education, Physical Activity, and Sports: PED 300 (2 credits) During this introduction to the country’s culture, history, nature, and arts, you will have the opportunity to explore the many faces of Cuba. Examine how Spanish, African, America, and indigenous influences have shaped various aspects of society. As you interact with people from diverse backgrounds – including artists, athletes, students, and professors – you will gain a deeper understanding of Cuba and its culture.
