British Institute Library
The British Institute and its Library have played an important role in Anglo-Florentine cultural life since 1917. Today the Harold Acton Library continues to provide a rich resource of books to borrow and browse, and it is also the venue for the British Institute’s stimulating programme of lectures and films.
Interns will be supporting the everyday work of the librarians, as well as helping in organising the events and the Cultural Programme.
Language requirement: None.
For this internship students will work in the nearby town of Fiesole. Projects might include work in its archealogical area, which holds the most important Roman amphitheater in or around Florence, or in the Museo Archeologico helping staff and curators develop informational material and possibly giving guided tours in English.
Language requirement: Basic to intermediate.
Istituto Nazionale di Studi sul Rinascimento (INSR)
The INSR is a research institute for Renaissance studies and a member of the IRIS Consortium, a network of Florentine libraries specializing in Renaissance art history. The intern updates the consortium’s extensive archives and databases. Recommended for students of history with good organizational skills.
Language requisites: Beginner’s to intermediate Italian.
Istituto Storico della Resistenza in Toscana (ISRT)
The ISRT is an institute for historical research that promotes the study of the Anti-Fascist and Resistance movement as well as a greater understanding of contemporary European and Italian history through its documentary archive and library consisting of more than 50,000 books and 2,500 periodicals. The institute also organizes training courses for teachers and students. The intern thus has the opportunity to experience a remarkable Italian cultural institution while keeping archives and records, managing a specialized library, and participating in historical education programs offered to schools and other associations.
Language prerequisite: Intermediate to advanced Italian.
Museo dei Ragazzi
The Associazione Museo dei Ragazzi offers guided tours of the secret passages and optical illusion rooms of Palazzo Vecchio to tourists and visitors. In the early part of the internship the intern receives training to give the tours and then in the second phase conducts the tours. The intern must be able to dedicate at least 10 hours of work a week. Recommended for students of history and art history.
