Time flies when you’re studying abroad, and, before you know it, the end of the semester is here! During the final weeks of the program, Syracuse Florence hosts a series of events to recognize and celebrate the achievements, talents, and memories of your semester in Florence.
Student Art and Architecture Shows
Studio arts and architecture students exhibit their work at Piazzale Donatello 21 and Piazzale Donatello 25, respectively. Both exhibits are an excellent opportunity to view and appreciate the extraordinary talent of so many art and architecture students. Light refreshments are served.
Outstanding Students Awards Ceremony
At the Outstanding Students Awards Ceremony, the director and program coordinators recognize those students who have demonstrated exceptional qualities of scholarship, leadership, artistic expression, and/or intercultural engagement during the semester.
Categories of merit include internships, community engagement, Italian language & culture, and academic achievement. Light refreshments are served.
“The Shelley Writing Prize” Syracuse Florence’s Academic Achievement Award
Since 1999, Syracuse Florence has recognized students who have aspired to the highest levels of integration into the Italian culture, demonstrated academic excellence through in-class performance, written, or graphic assignments, and have achieved outstanding results on examinations. Formerly known as the Coluccio Salutati Essay Award, today’s Shelley Writing Prize is awarded to three to four outstanding students each semester.
Faculty members may nominate a maximum of three students each. All nominated students are asked to submit a two-page essay, in English or Italian, on some aspect of their experience in Italy. Submitted essays are judged anonymously by a committee of four faculty members based on two criteria:
- The degree to which the students have challenged themselves to participate in and understand Italian culture and society.
- The literary quality of the composition itself.
After being presented with their certificates of merit at the Outstanding Students Awards ceremony, the winning essayists are asked to read their pieces to the audience.
With the students’ permission, winning essays will be posted on the Syracuse Florence website.
Festa Finale and the Student Slideshow
The Festa Finale gives everyone at Syracuse Florence–students, host families, faculty and staff–the opportunity to celebrate a great semester together and say “arrivederci” over great food, music, and a slide/video show created by students themselves. The slideshow gives all present the opportunity to relive and/or share in the special moments, places, and people that have contributed to your semester abroad.
I Giullari di Syracuse
I Giullari di Syracuse is Syracuse Florence’s theatrical group that each semester is made up aspiring young actors and actresses among the student body. Anyone who loves to perform, whether experienced or not, is encouraged to sign up at the beginning of the semester for Professor Eric Nicholson’s Acting Workshop. The hard work but good fun had throughout the semester culminates in a delightful performance that you won’t want to miss.
