Can I combine study at an SU center with local university study?
Yes, students may combine study at an SU center with coursework offered at local partner universities, provided they meet language and GPA requirements at foreign universities. For intermediate-level language students, enrolling during the fall semester in SU center courses taught in the host language is an excellent way to prepare for continued study in the spring at a local university. There are also options in Florence and Strasbourg for enrolling in language immersion programs with other international students.
What is the difference between an SU Center program and an SU World Partners program?
The World Partners program offers a range of models for SU students—from enrolling in small programs sponsored by other US universities (Africa, Costa Rica, Ecuador, India), to enrolling in foreign universities where most of your classes are with international students (Israel, Japan, and Korea), to directly enrolling in university courses alongside local students (Australia, Chile, Ireland). Individual programs have specific requirements, but in every case, it is the student’s responsibility to identify appropriate courses and get approvals for SU credit from academic advisers. Student services are sometimes not as comprehensive as at SU Abroad centers.
How do I find SU Abroad courses in my major?
You can search by either department/course subject, or by programs. In the case of SU centers, you can also view all courses offered at a given center. The search also tells you if a course is offered during the semester, summer, or as a short-term program.
Will credits count toward my major/degree?
All SU Abroad students receive Syracuse University credit for courses taken abroad, even when taken at host/partner universities. For SU students, this credit is applied toward major or elective requirements. Non-SU students receive credits either as home-university credit or as transfer credit, and should confirm their home school policy with their study abroad adviser.
What professional programs and courses does SU Abroad offer?
Most of Syracuse University’s professional schools offer programs abroad to both SU and non-SU students.

Can I take any professional school courses if my major is in liberal arts?
Most of the professional school courses are for majors, but there are also courses open to non-majors. A course search will give you course descriptions and requirements.
Does SU Abroad offer programs for graduate credit?
Yes. Many summer programs have courses and professional internships for graduate credit. Students who participate in these programs are typically enrolled in graduate degree programs, but students with undergraduate degrees who are not yet admitted to graduate programs are also eligible to apply. NOTE: SU Abroad Law Programs are only open to students already matriculated in Law School.
There are also graduate semester programs. Master’s degree programs in Architecture and in Renaissance Art History are offered in Florence, and students in Master’s programs in International Affairs/International Relations have semester options in Asia and Latin America. Graduate photojournalism courses are also offered in London during the fall semester.
Is there an SU Abroad language requirement?
There is no language requirement for admission to most of SU Abroad center programs. However, once admitted, all students enroll in language courses and/or courses taught in the host language. Enrollment in courses not taught in English at foreign universities do have language requirements.
Is there a GPA requirement?
A 3.0 minimum GPA is required for enrollment in courses at foreign universities. As SU Abroad Centers, GPA is one of a number of factors determining acceptance, and students below a 2.75 GPA may be waitlisted. In 2006, the average GPA for SU Abroad participating students was 3.33.
Does SU Abroad give scholarships and grants?
SU has both merit- and need-based grants for SU and non-SU students. For SU students, any current Syracuse grants are automatically applied to SU Abroad programs. Non-SU students should check with their home study abroad offices for institutional grants that apply.
Can I use my financial aid to study abroad?
For SU students, financial aid is automatically applied to the SU Abroad semester or summer program. Students from other schools are usually able to apply their federal financial aid to SU Abroad programs, and Syracuse will work with the financial aid offices at other schools to facilitate the process. If you are depending on loans to study abroad, we need written confirmation of the amount you will receive as soon as you know, so we can apply this as a credit to your account.

Do I need a passport and visa to study abroad?
All study abroad, regardless of duration, requires a passport, and students should apply for passports at their local post office as soon as they begin to consider study abroad. All SU Abroad semester programs require also require a student visa, with the exception of London.
NOTE: London students going for the academic year do need a visa. Most summer programs do not require a visa, with the exception of Italy.
