SU Abroad announces new field seminars in Asia for fall 2008
March 17, 2008
What does the Giant Panda sanctuary say about Chinese policy? How is Bangkok’s Emerald Buddha a symbol of 21st century tolerance? Find out this fall with one of two brand new pre-semester field study seminars just announced by SU Abroad. Both are packed with experiences that students won’t find anywhere else.
The first seminar is The Other China: Minority Cultures, Development, and the Environment—a prequel to a semester of study in Beijing. Led by Beijing center director Dr. Caroline Tong, the 2-credit, 2-week prequel focuses on cultural preservation and economic development in China’s resource-rich interior. "Other China" students will visit remote ethnic villages, controversial environment projects, and government agencies, as well as meet with a Tibetan family, and examine natural resources management. Students will gain a critical understanding of the challenges that face today’s Chinese ethnic minorities, a group of almost 100 million people, as well for the complexity of China’s choices moving forward.
"Students choosing to study in Beijing this fall are making a very savvy decision," says Sue Shane, director of programs for SU Abroad. "The new seminar is just one part of it. We are also offering financial aid and housing incentives that we don’t offer in the spring. Plus we’ve just added new non-intensive language options, and new undergraduate and graduate courses taught in English at Tsinghua University."
Shane notes that there are also new opportunities this fall for students considering a semester in Hong Kong. In addition to the financial incentives listed above, a new "prequel" has also been introduced entitled "Southeast Asia: Past, Present, and Future." The 2-week, 2- credit pre-semester course will travel to Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore for an expansive overview of the burgeoning economic, political, cultural, and strategic significance of the region. Students will visit many prominent financial, historic, and cultural sites in cities that include Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and an optional mid-semester trip to Beijing.
Applications for fall 2008 are still being accepted on a space-available basis for all SU Abroad center-based programs.
