Research Projects in Hong Kong

During Module C, SU Hong Kong student may pursue a group research project for a company or an independent research project under the direction of a SU Hong Kong faculty in the appropriate field. These projects may involve field study in HK or elsewhere in the region.

The SU Hong Kong director will review and approve or amend your project overseas.

  1. Students opt for Independent Study / Research in Module C MUST register in BUA/ PSC/ ECN/ FIL/ HST/ IRP/ LIT / REL / or ETS 490 for 3 credits.
  2. Students may pursue guided research or an independent study project during Module C. The project should be approved in advance by the home-campus academic adviser.
  3. Faculty member in Hong Kong in the appropriate discipline of study will supervise the project and assign a grade upon completion of the project. Pass/ Fail request is not allowed for students.
  4. Evaluation is based on a 20-25 page paper, though assignments may vary depending upon the project or research.

Requirements

Library research is often supplemented by field study and interviews. Because travel throughout Hong Kong, Mainland China and Asia is easy and relatively inexpensive, students are able to conduct research outside of Hong Kong, if recommended by the faculty adviser.

Duty of Faculty Advisor

  1. To deliver necessary lectures, basic reading list, reference reading list on the field of study
  2. To suggest possible research resources, e.g. organization or individuals for interview
  3. To meet and supervise the students (not less than 4 times during the guiding period, i.e. Lecture, Discussion on study outline, Revise draft essay, finalize the essay)
  4. To help in obtaining approval for an independent study project in advance by submitting a Proposal for Independent Study Course (as per sample) to SU Abroad. Proposed forms are available at SU Hong Kong and should include the following:
    • Title and Objective of the Project
    • Procedure of Study/ Nature of Experience: as # 1 & 2
    • Nature of Contact with faculty advisor: as # 3
    • Criteria for Accessing Student Performance according to the outcome of # 1-3
  5. To grade the independent study

Duty of Student

  1. To complete the above mentioned tasks (1-4) as supervised by faculty advisor
  2. To complete any other academic requirements in relations to the independent study as requested by faculty advisor
