Women“s & Gender Studies

The SU Women's & Gender Studies Program offers students the opportunity to learn about women's and gender issues from an international, cultural, and historical perspective. The program offers courses cross-listed with anthropology, film, history, literature, philosophy, political science, and sociology. At least three courses with a gender studies focus will be offered each semester.

In Italy, government funding supports a number of local and national agencies devoted to the special needs of women, ranging from free medical services and childcare to the encouragement of cultural activities and historical research. Students may choose from the selection of interdisciplinary courses, pursue an independent study project, or undertake an internship in a local organization. Students also have access to special events in Florence such as conferences, film festivals, lecture series, and exhibitions dedicated to gender-relevant issues.

The SU program is affiliated with WISE (Women's International Studies Europe), EMW (Society for the Study of Early Modern Women), PENTAFILLO Gruppo Interdisciplinare di Studio delle Storia delle Donna, SIS (Societą Italiana delle Storiche) and Progetto Donna, Comune di Firenze. It is also listed by GRACE, the European Women's Studies Databank in Brussels.
