Syracuse Abroad recognizes that this is a challenging time to make decisions about studying abroad next semester. We would like to reassure you that at this time, we are moving forward with our fall programs as planned. Our highest priority is the health and safety of our students and we will continue to review public health and travel advisory guidance leading up to and throughout the fall 2020 semester.

Also, to provide you with assurance in moving forward with your fall 2020 Center program application, we plan to:

  • Allow you to withdraw from your fall 2020 program or defer your enrollment to a new semester anytime prior to August 1, 2020.
  • Refund your $70 application fee and $575 deposit (paid by visiting students) should you choose to withdraw from your program prior to August 1, 2020.
  • Assist you in changing your enrollment to a new program at a different Syracuse Abroad center if needed and pending availability.

Frequently Asked Questions

How and when will it be decided if a program is cancelled?
The Office of Global Safety & Support at Syracuse University carefully monitors developments in close cooperation with various offices on the local, national, and international level such as the NYS Department of Health, the CDC, U.S. State Department, and International SOS.

We want to provide the very best study abroad experience for each of you. If we feel that your safety is at risk or that we can no longer provide an optimal experience for you, we will modify or cancel the program as needed.

When is the latest I can withdraw from my fall 2020 program?
We have developed a more flexible refund policy for fall 2020.  Syracuse Abroad will refund your $70 application fee and $575 deposit (visiting students) should you choose to withdraw from your program prior to August 1, 2020.

Can I defer my acceptance to the spring 2021 semester?
Yes, if you wish to defer your acceptance to spring 2021, you must contact your Syracuse Abroad program advisor to make this change before August 1, 2020.

Will I be able to switch to another study abroad program for fall 2020?
Yes, pending availability, you can change your enrollment to a new program at a different Syracuse Abroad center.  Please contact your Syracuse Abroad program advisor directly about this before August 1, 2020.

What happens if my fall 2020 program is cancelled?

Syracuse Abroad is strongly committed to helping you stay on track to graduate while abroad.

If a program is cancelled before the semester begins or during the early phase of the study abroad semester, we will work to either move you to another Syracuse Abroad center (when available and if applicable) or return you to main campus (for Syracuse students) or your home campus (for visiting students).

If a program is cancelled close to or beyond the half-way point of your semester abroad, we will assist you in completing coursework remotely, on the main Syracuse campus, or through a combination of both.

What is the likelihood that a fall 2020 program will be cancelled?
Unfortunately, we are unable to predict if a program will be cancelled. It is unknown how and when the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) will evolve in the United States and in locations of our study abroad centers. Be assured that we are monitoring all locations closely, and will maintain communication with all applicants as conditions evolve.

What should I do about housing if my fall 2020 program is cancelled?
Syracuse students: While Syracuse Abroad was unfortunately unable to secure guarantees for campus housing if fall 2020 programs are cancelled, we have been able to secure a commitment from our campus that support will be provided to help students find housing if needed. If your fall 2020 program is cancelled and you need assistance with housing, please contact the Office of Student Living at this email address: orlsc@syr.edu. This office will be prepared to:

  • Help you find off-campus housing, or direct you to on-campus housing if there is availability
  • Help you understand the website, offer advice/services like Student Legal Services, and other information about landlords/leases
  • Provide all follow-up, continued assistance that you may need

Visiting students: Please reach out to your home campus to determine your housing options for the fall 2020 semester.

If I applied to a summer program, can I have my application switched to another semester?
Yes, please connect directly with your Syracuse Abroad program advisor or by emailing us at SUAbroad@syr.edu about switching your application to fall 2020 or spring 2021.

Whom should I contact if I have any additional questions?
Please reach out directly to your Syracuse Abroad program advisor or contact us at SUAbroad@syr.edu.
