FRE449 France from World War I to the European Union (Spring)

Taught in French. An exploration of the central events and issues in France, from the end of World War I to the present day. We will cover the rise of the Front Populaire, the catastrophic defeat of May 1940 and the ensuing “black years” of the Nazi Occupation, the end of French colonial rule in Indochina and North Africa, the miraculous period of economic growth starting in the 1950s, the events of 1968, and finally France’s integration into the European Union. Meets with HST 449.

Prereq: FRE 202 (or four semesters of college-level French)
