Examine the gradual emergence of “modern” sexual identities and how sexuality has become central to issues of both individual and national identity in modern Europe, with an emphasis on queer sexualities. Starting with eighteenth-century scientia sexualis, study the politics of sexuality in the early twentieth century and the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s, up to contemporary debates about LGBTQ rights in a multicultural Europe. We pay particular attention to issues of power, including how sexual orientation has often been linked to other identities (gender, ethnicity, class, religion) in asymmetrical, oppressive ways throughout history.
