  • Magic realism as a debate. Readings: Juan Rulfo’s Pedro Páramo; selection of accounts by A. Carpentier and M.A. Asturias.
  • Poetry of the avant-garde. Readings: Selection of poems by V. Huidobro, C. Vallejo, P. Neruda, J.L. Borges, O. Girondo, N. Guillén.
  • The new Spanish-American novel, from the boom to the “post-boom.” Readings (choose one from each group):
    A) G.G. Márquez, Cien años de soledad; J. Donoso, El lugar sin límites. 
    B) A. Mastretta, Arráncame la vida; M. Puig, El beso de la mujer araña; Reinaldo Arenas, El mundo alucinante.
  • Poetry of pos-vanguardia. Reading: Selection of poems by Octavio Paz and Nicanor Parra.
  • Hispanic-American Theater in the 20th Century. Reading: Griselda Gambaro, La malasangre; selection of essays.
