As such, we&#8217;re committed to supporting students with historically excluded &amp; underrepresented identities studying abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Spain, and Madrid in particular, is welcoming; however, Black students, indigenous students, students of color, and\/or members of the LGBTQIA2+ community may experience challenges and\/or microaggressions abroad. Our staff is here to provide you with support.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;d love to hear from you! Don&#8217;t hesitate to contact Student Life to propose new initiatives or discuss any current topics you might be interested in regarding the identities reflected below and the innumerable identities that make up our Syracuse Madrid community. The Student Life Office is located in Room 202 on the second floor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iie.es\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the items below, plenty of written resources for you can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/acrobat.adobe.com\/link\/review?uri=urn:aaid:scds:US:6a028913-9c04-3aba-ab0d-8bf5da18c315\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Resources in Madrid<\/h2>\n<h3>BIPOC Students<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sosracismomadrid.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SOS Racismo Madrid<\/a> is a non-profit organization that seeks to combat all forms of discrimination and segregation due to skin color, national origin, or religious or cultural motives. They also have an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sosracismomad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram acount<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/afropean.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Afropean<\/a> is an online multimedia, multidisciplinary journal exploring the social, cultural, and aesthetic interplay of Black and European cultures, as well as the synergy of styles and ideas brought about as a result of this union. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/afropean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here&#8217;s<\/a> their Instagram.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.africanidad.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Africanidad<\/a> is an online newspaper for Spanish-speaking people of African descent in Spain.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/melaninmadrid.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Melanin Madrid<\/a> is a network of people of color in Madrid. We help POC relocate through community, consulting and digital resources.&#8221; They host events, have a blog with resources around the city, and have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCM0jDWGP1N3qSFRHTNoRVkw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube channel<\/a> where they feature their new &#8220;Black in Madrid&#8221; series that aired in 2021. Their Facebook page and forum can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/melaninmadrid\/?ref=page_internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> and their Instagram <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/melaninmadrid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The multidisciplinary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conciencia-afro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Conciencia Afro<\/a> team is made up of African and Afro-descendant people from different areas. They work on a variety of projects and host discussion groups and an annual festival. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/espacioafro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here&#8217;s<\/a> their IG.<span style=\"color: #d44500\"><strong><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Although the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/KwanzaaAfrodescendientes\/?locale=es_ES\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Asociaci\u00f3n Universitaria Kwanzaa<\/a> is officially associated with the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, they host events by, for, and about Black people hailing from any university or oganization!<\/p>\n<p>Very similarly to the Asociaci\u00f3n Universitaria Kwanzaa, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EstudiantesAbyaYala\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Estudiantes Abya Yala<\/a> is officially associated with the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. However, they host events by, for, and about all people from so-called South and Central America, known as Abya Yala by certain indigenous peoples of the Americas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/liwai.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LIWAI Interacci\u00f3n Cultural<\/a> is an interdisciplinary team of professionals of Chinese descent. They work to create and promote spaces for the Chinese community and allies throughout Spain, offering workshops, events, talks, conferences, and beyond.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DFitXyTu5jn\/?hl=en&amp;img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ayllu<\/a> is an artistic and political collective formed by immigrants from Spain&#8217;s former colonies (South and Central America). In addition to other projects, they oversee the creation and exhibition of antiracist visual art.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaleamenge.org\/quienes-somos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>BIPOC Women Students<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flourishintheforeign.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flourish in the Foreign<\/a> is an award-winning podcast that <span class=\"x4k7w5x x1h91t0o x1h9r5lt xv2umb2 x1beo9mf xaigb6o x12ejxvf x3igimt xarpa2k xedcshv x1lytzrv x1t2pt76 x7ja8zs x1qrby5j x1jfb8zj\">celebrates, elevates and affirms the voices and stories of Black women living and thriving abroad while exploring living abroad as a pathway to wellness (available on <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/flourish-in-the-foreign\/id1509976748?fbclid=IwAR3Y0M-MbK0yj-yLpqo0UtDqvaoW_GWclJ15QkEmxe1oJuATK8OiJ4o5HjI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple Podcasts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/667sTdtG7RedWvFY1FFMea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spotify<\/a>, and other platforms). The website includes additional resources and readings, and you can follow the page&#8217;s Instagram <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/flourishforeign\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/afrofeminas.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Afrof\u00e9minas<\/a> is an online community for Spanish-speaking women of African descent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/melaninmadrid.com\/ethnic-maintenance-in-madrid-shea-butter-oils-hair-and-so-on\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Ethnic Maintenance in Madrid: Shea Butter, Oils, Hair, and So On&#8221;<\/a>: This article from Melanin Madrid has a list of recommended places for eyebrow threading, hair care products, hair salons, and more.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>LGBTQIA2+ Students<span style=\"color: #d44500\"><strong><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Syracuse University has been ranked by the Huffington Post as one of the top 10 queer-friendly campuses in the United States. Syracuse Madrid aims to continue to provide support to our LGBTQIA2+ student community abroad, and Madrid has a wealth of resources for the community.<\/p>\n<h4>Activities<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucm.es\/diversidad\/diversidad-sexual-e-identidad-de-genero\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oficina de Diversidad Sexual e Identidad de G\u00e9nero<\/a> is the Universidad Complutense de Madrid&#8217;s diversity office.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cogam.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COGAM<\/a>: LGBTQIA+ Association of Madrid has weekly activities where newcomers are welcome. For more information, or to get in touch with their welcome committee <strong>in English<\/strong>, contact <a href=\"mailto:educacion@cogam.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">educacion@cogam.org.<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Activities geared towards lesbians every Friday evening<\/li>\n<li>Groups on Saturday afternoons for people 30 years old and younger<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/batucadaquentiende.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La Batucada que Entiende<\/a> is a percussion school that doubles as a meeting point for women whether they identify as queer or heterosexual.
