Teaching Opportunity: Architecture Design Studio & Field Study Instructor

Job Description:

Syracuse University in Florence seeks one part-time instructor to teach an Architecture Design Studio and the parallel Field Study Course during the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters. These two courses, developed within the Architecture Program’s curricular framework, structure the core experience of Architecture Study Abroad for our students. Teaching is at the undergraduate level.

The Design Studio is built around a research topic shared across three sections. It introduces students to designing in Italy’s complex material, cultural, political, and spatial context. Responding to a shared theme, the studio prompt can open up to various scales and areas of investigation in line with the instructor’s specific area of research, expertise, and interests. The studio meets twice weekly, Tuesday and Thursday, from 13:45 to 19:45.

The Field Study Course parallels the students’ design investigations with first-hand study of relevant architectural sites across Italy. Mapping, sketching, on-site lectures, and collaborations with local researchers give students an expanded view of the Italian Architectural landscape. Sites of study vary by year to support a stronger integration with the design discourse built in the studio. The field study course does not have a fixed weekly meeting: it unfolds over two full-day activities in Florence and four weekend trips (Fri-Sun) in different locations in Italy.

Qualifications:

A professional degree in Architecture and an advanced degree in Architecture or a closely related design field are required. The school is particularly interested in candidates with teaching experience in a professional architecture program. Responsibilities:

  • Developing a course syllabus in dialogue with the Architecture Curriculum.
  • Preparation of lectures, projects, or other assignments for architecture students.
  • Work collaboratively with other studio instructors to articulate a shared learning experience across the Program.
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours.

  • Building a positive rapport with students.

Application Instructions:
