A 1-credit internship requires 45 hours of work per semester. Most interns work on site, twice a week, for four hours a week, for 10 weeks, and meet with their faculty supervisors for approximately five hours throughout the semester. Students should also factor in travel time to and from the host organization, generally 20-30 minutes each way. The office hours and scheduling needs of host organizations and site supervisors vary. Students should discuss specific schedules with the internship coordinator or faculty supervisor before undertaking an internship to avoid conflicts with their own schedules. Caution: Only students taking a regular course load of 12 credits should consider doing an internship for two (90 hours/semester) or three (135 hours/semester) credits. All interns will meet in a class setting once a week and be required to complete an asynchronous 4-hour work safety training before arrival in Italy.
No. Internships are for academic credit only. All students are assigned a faculty supervisor who determines the criteria by which they will be graded and the nature of the final project. Even if your home college does not accept internship credit or you personally do not need the credit, your internship will include assignments which must be completed and handed in. A final grade will be recorded on your transcript.
Departmental credit is not available, you can only receive an IPA credit.
Note: Some colleges do not accept internship credits at all. Check in advance with your home campus academic advisor if you are unsure.
Not necessarily. Some internships require an intermediate level of spoken Italian, but most require no prior Italian language skills.
Some internships are in greater demand than others, so not all requests can be satisfied. Site supervisors will make their decision based on an applicant’s qualifications and academic objectives. Some internships are not offered every semester, and we do not offer internships in medicine or finance.
Generally speaking, no. You’ll often have field trips on Fridays, so on-site internship work is usually limited to Mondays through Thursdays. However, it is helpful to keep a few Fridays free during the semester in case you need to make up the hours required to complete your internship. Students taking internships for more than 1 credit (or during the intensive summer session) will likely need to work on Fridays. Internships related to special events, performing arts, or hospitality are also likely to require weekend and/or night shifts.
