Who gets to shape how a city looks, and what does art say about who holds power? This course looks at visual art in London and the questions of politics and power it raises. Students study selected painters, performers, filmmakers and sculptors closely, along with the institutions that commission, display and protect their work and the built environments where art meets public life. Frequent field trips and on-site study across the city make London the classroom. Students learn to read artworks and spaces as political statements. They look at how art has been used to assert authority, challenge it and negotiate it, and how institutions and urban spaces shape what people see and how they see it.
