Application Considerations

Syracuse Abroad maintains specific enrollment designations for Syracuse Center, World Partner and special programs.  Due to limited program capacity, admission to Spring study abroad programs is not guaranteed.  

Students are strongly encouraged to consider Fall study abroad opportunities, when some programs may have greater availability.  Spring programs are highly competitive and regularly reach capacity.  In recent enrollment cycles, all Spring Syracuse Abroad programs filled to capacity, and several experienced significant competition, and some programs admitted fewer than half of applicants. 

Because program demand often exceeds available space, students are encouraged to remain flexible by considering multiple program options and alternative terms.

Syracuse Abroad offers students the opportunity to submit an Academic Probation Policy Appeal or a Low GPA Petition under certain circumstances.  However, these exceptions are not available for Spring study abroad applicants.

How to Apply

Selecting Your Program:

Find the program you would like to apply to. Browse our program offerings or visit the program selector to find your program of interest. Once you are ready, click on the program title to access the Apply Now button and begin your application once the application cycle for the term you are interested in has opened. You will be prompted to create an OrangeAbroad account.

Creating Your OrangeAbroad Account:

*Please note that you cannot create your OrangeAbroad account until the application cycle has opened.

Syracuse University student applicants will be able to log in directly to the OrangeAbroad portal using their NetID & password once the application has opened. Upon signing in, complete the required profile questions. You will then be brought to your applicant homepage where you will click on your application name to access the application and begin working on your checklist items.

Application Requirements

Note: Beginning with the Fall 2027 application cycle, Syracuse University students applying to Center and World Partner semester programs are no longer admitted on a rolling admission basis.  The timing of your application submission within the application window will not affect your decision, so there’s no advantage to applying early. Take the time you need to submit a strong, complete application.  

• General Demographic Information- Name, Email, Address, etc 
• Current, most up to date transcript
  • Your advising transcript, which you can access through Myslice, is sufficient for this requirement.  
  • Reminder – GPA Requirement: please note that all programs have a required overall GPA to be considered for admission  
• Passport Information Form
  • Students must acknowledge that they currently hold or will obtain a passport that is valid at least six months past your program end date (one year for programs in Spain)  
    • You will be asked to provide your passport information (including a copy of the identification page). If you are currently renewing or applying for a passport, there will be an option to note that.
    • If you are in the process of renewing or applying for your passport, you will be considered for conditional acceptance to the program.

• $50 non-refundable application fee paid within your application  
• Language History Information (Required only for programs with a language course)
• Admissions Survey; including personal statement 
• Authorization and Release Information
• Alternative Program Option Information
  • Due to capacity constraints, we ask students to select a second and third choice alternate program. Your application will only be reviewed for an alternate program if we are unable to admit you to your first- choice program. Selecting alternate choices does not decrease your likelihood of receiving an acceptance to your first- choice program. If you do not select alternate program choices, you will not increase the likelihood of receiving an offer to your first- choice program location. Please be sure to discuss your alternative options with your academic advisor.
  • Due to capacity constraints, securing a spot on Syracuse Abroad Center programs in the Spring, or on a World Partner program, is not guaranteed. Students are strongly encouraged to consider Fall study abroad.
  • While students are invited to apply to their preferred program and term, final placements are determined based on a range of important considerations and cannot be guaranteed. Our goal is to match each student with a study abroad program that best supports their academic goals, personal interests, and the opportunities available.

Please note that some programs have additional application requirements such as a portfolio for studio art or design programs or a language recommendation for a student applying to an advanced language program.

Completing Your Application

Once you have created your application within the OrangeAbroad portal, begin completing your required checklist items.

Once all required items have been completed (as indicated under the completed requirements section in your OrangeAbroad portal), your application will be marked as complete and will be reviewed after the program’s application deadline date. Please note that there is no final submit button for your application. 

Application Evaluation

Applications will not be reviewed until after the application deadline, not on a rolling basis.  Syracuse Abroad applicants are evaluated through a comprehensive review, and admissions decisions are based on multiple factors including but not limited to the student’s cumulative GPA, personal statement, academic rationale for pursuing the program, and alignment with program priorities.

Comprehensive Review

Cumulative GPA : Evaluates the student’s academic performance at Syracuse University at the time of application completion.  As the strongest indicator of academic success, cumulative GPA serves as the most heavily weighted factor in the review process.

Academic Rationale: Assesses whether the applicant is seeking admission to a special program (e.g., London Center: Engineering, Florence Center: Design) that provides academic opportunities essential to the student’s major, minor, or degree requirements.  Additionally, each Syracuse University school or college has its own enrollment capacity for study abroad  participation.  These capacity limits help manage program demand and ensure alignment with academic goals.  Students are encouraged to remain flexible and consider multiple program options and/or alternative terms.

Language Learners: Priority consideration may be given to students pursuing a major or minor in the language associated with their preferred study abroad program.

Special Populations and Student Status: Priority consideration may be given to students from designated populations (e.g., Coronat Scholars, Kessler Scholars, and Gilman Scholars), third- and fourth-year Syracuse University students, and students who have not previously participated in a study abroad program.

How to Apply

First time visiting student applicants will need to create a profile on the OrangeAbroad portal to proceed once the application has opened. You will need to indicate that you are a visiting student creating an account for the first time. You will be asked to provide basic information and will be sent temporary log-in credentials by email. After receiving your temporary log-in credentials, sign back in to your newly created account, responding that you have an existing account and are logging in with your email address. Complete this sign-on process with the temporary credentials and when prompted, set your permanent password and security questions.

Upon signing in, complete the required profile questions. You will then be brought to your applicant homepage where you will click on your application name to access the application and begin working on your checklist items.

Note – Visiting students who are unable to complete their profile in a single session may need to return to the program’s brochure page and select ‘Apply Now’ a second time to reinitiate the application session.

  • You will be asked to provide your passport information (including a copy of the identification page) after you are accepted to a Syracuse Abroad program. If you are currently renewing or applying for a passport, there will be an option to note that post-acceptance*.

    • *Students applying to a Summer or Short-term program will need to include their passport information as part of the initial application
• $50 non-refundable application fee paid within your application  
• Language History Information (Required only for programs with a language course) 
• Admissions Survey 
• Authorization and Release Information
• Study Abroad Approval Form (Visiting students only)- a completed Study Abroad Approval Form from your home institution completed by your study abroad advisor.
