This studio course immerses students in the drawing methods of Renaissance Florence, using the sketchbook as both working format and historical model. Focusing on the human figure, students work directly from museum masterpieces, period treatises, and live models, developing rigorous drawing skills and deepening their understanding of technique, anatomy, and proportion.
Students work through the human figure using the materials and techniques of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Florentine practice: silverpoint, chalk, ink, toned papers and white hightening. The sketchbook serves as the primary record of the course: a cumulative document of observation, technical experiment, and cultural encounter, built across the semester through sustained engagement with a tradition that produced some of the most rigorous figurative art in history.
This course has an associated course fee. See the Course Fees webpage for more information.
