This course offers an in-depth exploration of Spain’s history, considering its role in international relations and its influence on the global stage, focusing on its cultural, political and strategic importance. The course will examine Spain’s historical connections to Europe, United States, the Mediterranean and its deep-rooted cultural bonds with Latin America.
Throughout the course, you will investigate Spain’s shifting influence across different global regions and explore how historical legacies continue to shape Spain’s foreign policies and international relations today. We will also explore key historical concepts of geopolitics and international relations to understand how Spain’s geographic location, political power, and economic interests influenced global dynamics over the centuries.
The course will also focus on Spain’s complex relationships with North Africa, the Mediterranean, and Europe, addressing critical periods like the Spanish Civil War, the Cold War, and Spain’s accession to NATO. Special attention will be given to Spain’s position as a bridge between Europe and Latin America, exploring its long-standing historical connections and modern economic and political partnerships. Key topics include Spain’s involvement in the Mediterranean, the historical conflict over Gibraltar, and its modern-day partnerships with countries like Morocco, the United States and the Latin American region.
In addition to the historical analysis, you will explore Spain’s evolving role in multilateral organizations, including its use of cultural diplomacy to strengthen global ties. Visits to key cultural and diplomatic institutions, such as Casa Árabe and the Instituto Cervantes, will provide real-world context to the academic material, helping students appreciate Spain’s ongoing soft power efforts in contemporary international relations.
