SPA480.44 Chilean and Ibero-Latin American Poetry (Poesía de Chile e Iberoamérica)

The objective of this course is to bring an understanding and appreciation for the main features of the principal movements and tendencies in Latin American and Chilean poetry, from modernism to present. It presents an overview of contemporary literary theory. Topics and authors include: Modernism (Rubén Darío); Vanguardism (e.g. Vicente Huidobro, Pablo Neruda, César Vallejo, Pablo de Rokha); Women and poetry writing (e.g. Gabriela Mistral, Alfonsina Storni, Delmira Agustini, Alejandra Pizarnik); Anti-poetry (Nicanor Parra); Eros, Thanatos and Poetry (Gonzalo Rojas, Armando Uribe); Generations of the 50, 60, and 80. El objetivo del curso es la compresión y apreciación de los rasgos más característicos de los principales movimientos y tendencias de la poesía latinoamericana y chilena desde el modernismo hasta el presente. Muestra un panorama de la teoría literaria contemporánea. Temas y autores incluyen: el Modernismo (Rubén Darío); el Vanguardismo (Vicente Huidobro, Pablo Neruda, César Vallejo, Pablo de Rokha); la mujer y la escritura poética (Gabriela Mistral, Alfonsina Storni, Delmira Agustini, Alejandra Pizarnik); la Antipoesía (Nicanor Parra); Eros, Tánatos y Poesía (Gonzalo Rojas, Armando Uribe); Generaciones de los 50, 60 y 80.

This course combines the theory and practice of literary criticism through the analysis of literary, critical, and theoretical texts. Students will able to analyze a text in a critical and creative way from a consistent theoretical perspective. Students will also be able to produce critical texts such as reviews, short essays, and articles. The basis for interpretation of a variety of Ibero-Latin American texts will be the relationship between subjectivity and city from the point of view of cultural, gender, and postcolonial studies. El curso combina la teoría y la práctica de la crítica literaria por medio del análisis de textos literarios, críticos, y teóricos. Los estudiantes podrán analizar un texto crítica e imaginativamente usando una perspectiva teórica coherente. Podrán, también, producir textos críticos tales como reseñas, ensayos cortos y artículos. La base de la interpretación de una variedad de textos iberoamericanos será la relación entre subjetividad y ciudad desde el punto de vista de estudios de la cultura, el género sexual y el poscolonialismo. This course introduces students to the analysis of the Asian region and its relations with Latin America, in particular with Chile. It offers spatial, political, and cultural perspectives on the Asian-Pacific region and Latin America. Students analyze the integration of both regions into the global development process and the comparative advantages that stem from their geographical locations. The course includes the study of Asian political systems (e.g. actors, decision making process, and policies.) Este curso introduce a los estudiantes al análisis de la región asiática y sus relaciones con la América Latina, particularmente con Chile. Se ofrecen perspectivas espaciales, políticas y culturales sobre la región del Pacifico Asiático y Latinoamérica. Los estudiantes analizarán la integración de ambas regiones al proceso del desarrollo global y las comparativas ventajas que su ubicación geográfica les confiere. The 20th century witnessed a manifestation of modernizing processes in Latin America. The literature of the region raised a voice that for the first time the world could listen with clarity; a voice with the characteristics of a culture that maintains a difficult relationship with modernity. This course reflects on this relationship and incorporates literary analysis in the study of Latin-American culture. El siglo XX sido testigo de una manifestación de procesos modernizadores en la América Latina. La literatura de la región alzó una voz que el mundo pudo oír con claridad por vez primera; una voz con las características de una cultura que mantiene una relación difícil con la modernidad. The course covers the most important developments of the 20th century in Latin America from historic, geographic, and political perspectives. Topics include: cultural synthesis, political systems and political participation, integration and modernization, social change economic development, demographic dynamics and territorial challenges, such as migration and urbanization. This course aims to familiarize students with the principle political, economic, social, and cultural phenomena associated with the formation and development of Latin American society. Students will discuss national and cultural Latin American identity, the development crisis and modernization, and the beginnings of a new social and cultural synthesis, among other topics. El curso familiariza a los estudiantes con los principales fenómenos políticos, económicos, sociales y culturales asociados con la formación y desarrollo de la sociedad latinoamericana. This course approaches the concept of family from a sociological perspective, with a particular analytical focus on the Chilean family and its transformations over the past few decades. Students will explore the evolution of the family in its various stages of existence, and its social importance throughout history and in different cultures. El curso se propone dar a conocer los principios políticos, económicos y culturales asociados con la formación y el desarrollo de la sociedad latinoamericana. This course examines the cultural and historical processes that have shaped a singular yet structurally complex Latin American culture. Topics addressed in this course include the formative cult experience of the Virgin Mary, the political experience of Populism, and the lack of Enlightenment in Latin America. This course explores the nature, characteristics, and functions of various international organizations, intergovernmental and nongovernmental. It reviews theories and concepts used to study international organizations. Topics include: the impact of international organizations on life around the globe, the role and impact of international organizations within the larger context of world politics; and the theoretical debate about structure versus agency. The course uses case studies to better understand the operations, decision-making processes, and characteristics of international organization according to their area of focus: security, commerce, finance, international development, and humanitarian aid. Se repasan teorías y conceptos usados para estudiar las organizaciones internacionales. Students enrolling in this course will achieve a comprehensive view of the political development of Chile and the role of institutions in this political evolution. Through lectures, forums, and field study, students will analyze the way in which these institutions have mediated conflict, adapted to authoritarianism, and transitioned to their current roles in the post-authoritarianism democracy. Los estudiantes alcanzarán un visión comprensiva del desarrollo político de Chile y del papel de las instituciones en esa evolución. Por medio de conferencias, foros, y estudios de campo, los estudiantes analizarán la manera en que estas instituciones han actuado como mediadoras de conflictos, se han adaptado al autoritarismo, y han efectuado la transición a sus nuevos papeles en la democracia posautoritaria.
