PAI680.60 Politics and Government in China (Tsinghua U – grad)

This course is designed for students who have limited knowledge of China. You will learn about some basic aspects of political institutions and processes as well as major events in Chinese political life under the communists since 1949, focusing on the post-Mao reform period since 1978. Students are expected to have two questions in mind throughout the whole course: first, how the political institutions of China, both formal and informal, have brought about the socio-economic outcomes across different periods in China; second, from a comparative perspective, how this link between political institutions and socio-economic outcomes could be related to the general theory of state-society relation as well as the practice of your home country.
