This course focuses on the emergence and characteristics of modern politics and the modern state. We shall explore the development and the various facets of the modern state through the writings of such major thinkers as Niccolo Macchiavelli, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Montesquieu, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Edmund Burke, Friederich Hegel and Karl Marx.
