Option III places students with advanced Italian language proficiency in selected courses at the University of Florence. Qualified students may enroll in corsi singoli in the Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia or Facoltà di Scienze Politiche of the University of Florence.
Coursework
Students in Option III may enroll in up to three corsi singoli. They must also enroll in at least one three-credit course at the SU Center. Each Option III course typically earns 4 or 5 credits. Because of differences between the Italian and U.S. university systems, most students take between one and three corsi singoli in combination with courses offered at the SU Center in Florence or at the Centro di Cultura per Stranieri.
All courses at the University of Florence are conducted entirely in Italian, including oral and written reports, examinations, and research papers. Option III students are assigned a personal tutor in their field of study, which fulfills contact hour requirements for each corso singolo.
Qualification
Qualified students requesting this option will be admitted based on their academic record, recommendation by a current Italian language instructor, and essay written in Italian.
Program Duration
Option III is offered for either one or two semesters. The Italian university calendar may differ from the Syracuse calendar depending upon the department/discipline of study, so Option III students may need to remain in Florence longer than the duration of the SU Florence semester. Students are advised, if their academic program permits, to attend advanced language courses at the Centro di Cultura per Stranieri (Option II) prior to beginning selected courses at the University of Florence.
Application & Admission
If you wish to be placed in corsi singoli in regular departments of the University of Florence, you should indicate your interest on the application form and follow the special requirements for Option II/III applicants.
Note:
The program fee for students who enroll in corsi singoli will be increased to cover the additional room and board costs if courses extend beyond those of Syracuse University in Florence.
