Program Description

What You Need to Know

International Digital & Social Media Platforms is a 3-credit course that compares how different countries use digital and social media. Students will learn how to use digital tools and social media platforms for completing a country analysis to examine critical factors for understanding how different countries use social media today.

Students will attend the Cannes Lions International Festival to participate in communication industry seminars, workshops, master classes, and case studies to learn how different countries are using digital and social media.

Travel and Living

Students arrange and pay for their own round-trip air transportation to Cannes, France. Transportation for program-related field trips is arranged by SU Abroad and included in the program fee. Students will be housed in shared rooms in a hotel in Cannes.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not purchase your airline ticket before receiving written notification from us that you can book your flight. You will have to present this notification if we cancel the program at a later date, and you want to be reimbursed for the cost of the ticket.

Students who choose to arrange and pay for their own housing in France must notify SU Abroad in writing at the time of application.

Courses

International Digital and Social Media (COM 400/600, 3 credits undergraduate or graduate)

The group will meet 4 times (3hrs each meeting) prior to departure and features a 10-day intensive, hands-on experience for junior and senior undergraduates and master’s degree candidates interested in digital and social media.

The hands-on use of digital and social media before, during, and after the festival is required.

The purpose of this course is to study international digital & social media platforms in other countries.

Specifically, completion of this course will provide students with:

  • Insight through hands-on use of digital and social tools for primary and secondary research and engagement to understand critical factors in international digital and social media use;
  • Understanding comparison of digital and social media platforms in different countries by analyzing critical factors such as history, geography, natural environment, infrastructure, cultural environment, political & legal environment, and economic indicators;
  • Applying international digital and social media best practice, case study, and integration.

Faculty

Dr. William J. Ward, is the Professor of Practice of Social Media at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. He teaches courses on Digital & Social Media and Communications. Dr. Ward is ranked one of the "Top Marketing Professors on Twitter" in the world by Social Media Marketing Magazine for providing useful content and consistently engaging with followers and truly "getting it" when it comes to the best ways to use Twitter and other forms of Social Media. He earned his Ph.D. in Media and Information Studies at Michigan State University and has worked with numerous Fortune 500 companies and brands and has received awards for creative and strategic excellence. Dr. Ward has taught in China, Italy, and France and has taken over 200 students on international study abroad programs to the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.
