Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do now that I have been accepted?

1. Do you have a valid passport? If not, apply for one immediately! Record numbers of applicants and backlog have caused major delays in issuing and renewing passports so get yours NOW! Choose the expediting option to ensure timely delivery.

2. Do you need a visa? If you are a US citizen studying in China, England or Italy-YES. Other countries may require a visa upon entry or in advance if you plan to intern while there. You may need a visa depending on the country you are traveling to and your citizenship. If you are a non-US citizen, check with the host country’s embassy for the requirements. It is your responsibility to check the requirements and obtain the necessary visa.

More information on obtaining a visa for China, England and Italy will be provided to you. If you need to fill out any paperwork for a visa- GET IT DONE QUICKLY! Do not wait until the last minute or you may not be able to go!

If you plan to travel to other countries before, during or after your program, please check to see if a visa is required before going abroad.

3. Have you started filling out your post-acceptance forms? Fill these forms out as soon as you can and turn them into our office as soon as possible.

4. Start researching the country you are traveling to. Guide books and internet sites are great resources. Plan out where you want to visit and what you want to see.

What other information will I be receiving?

After you are accepted into the program you will receive an acceptance packet which will include an acceptance letter, post acceptance forms, and the study abroad handbook. You will then receive more information such as the practical information book, syllabi, financial aid information (non-SU students), notarized entry letter, participant list, contact information, registration information and final departure information. All this information will be sent via mail and email. We will also post information on our website for quick reference as well.

Is there a deposit?

Yes, there is a $450 non-refundable deposit that is due 10 days after you have been accepted into the program. This should be sent in with your Form #1, Intent to Register. This payment is non-refundable and cannot be used as a credit towards Syracuse University charges. Make your check payable to Syracuse University in U.S. funds and be sure to include your social security and SUID and/or your social security number on the check.

Should I book my plane tickets now?

Do not purchase your airline ticket before receiving notification from us that you can book your flight. You will have to present this notification if we cancel the program at a later date, and you want to be reimbursed for the cost of the ticket.

When do I register for classes?

You will be asked to pre-register for classes following admission to the program. Final registration will occur when you arrive overseas. If you are going on a summer session program with multiple course offerings, please make sure you choose atlernate courses in case of a scheduling conflict or cancellation.

When do I learn about my internship placement?

You will meet with the internship coordinator (or director, in some programs) during orientation abroad to learn about various options. The placement is finalized once you have an interview with the prospective on-site supervisor(s).

When do I learn about my host family?

You learn about your host family during orientation abroad before you are placed. At that time the housing coordinator can answer your questions and share other students’ feedback about the placement.

Will we have an orientation?

Orientation will be held onsite when you arrive in the host country. In addition, students and parents will receive pre-departure information in the mail and via email.

How do I make payments?

Full payment is required in advance of the commencement of the program. Payment should be made directly to Syracuse University. Please visit the Bursar’s office website for more information: http://bfasweb.syr.edu/bursar/ If payment is not received on time you may be withdrawn from the program and you may not be able to participate.

What if I am receiving financial aid?

Let us know what type of financial aid you are expecting. If you are a non-SU student and you are receiving financial aid from your home school we will need a letter certifying the amount and disbursement date.

Do I need health insurance?

Yes, you do need to be covered by a valid health insurance plan that covers you during your time abroad.For more information on coverage options, please see the Study Abroad Handbook.

What about personal property insurance?

Many students bring valuable equipment such as laptops and cameras overseas. To protect your possessions again fire, theft and vandalism, you may want to consult your parents’ homeowners insurance. You may already be covered under their plans. However, in some cases you may want to consider purchasing short-term personal property insurance designed for students living or traveling overseas.

Important Note: SU Abroad is not responsible for items that are lost, stolen or damaged abroad. Make sure your valuables are covered by insurance.

Will the credits transfer?

Be sure to check with your home school before departing to be sure that all your credits will transfer back toward your degree. Please note that the grading option you select may affect the transfer of credit. You will receive an official transcript after you have completed the program.

How can I request a copy of my transcript?

Official transcripts and grades are issued by the Register’s Office at Syracuse University. The SU Abroad office does not send out official grade reports or transcripts. You can request a transcript through the Register’s Office by following this link: http://registrar.syr.edu/students/transcripts.html

Can I speak with a former participant?

Yes. We have a list of former students who would love to share with you their experiences and advice. You can request this information from our office suabroad@syr.edu

What is an ISIC card?

Syracuse University Abroad provides limited insurance coverage to program participants with the International Student I.D. Card (ISIC). This coverage is supplemental to your own insurance coverage. The cost of the ISIC card is included in your program fee so please remember to complete Form #9 and send us the appropriate- sized photo for your card as soon as possible. Tell me about International SOS?

All Syracuse University Abroad students are enrolled as members of the International SOS medical resource program which provides a full range of medical information and emergency referral services. Through this program, parents and students can get referral services, translation services, and other emergency medical information 24 hours a day. With their SOS password, SU Abroad students have access to the International SOS site www.internationalsos.com where they can register their health records and medical history, find a network of physicians, specialists, hospitals, and specific medical recommendations for cities all over the world. Student and their parents will receive the membership card in the mail before departure.

What if there is an emergency at home while I’m abroad?

Your parents should contact SU Abroad at Syracuse University. Emergency contacts are regularly updated and provided at our toll-free number 1-800-235-3472.

What if there is an emergency while I’m overseas?

Contact our local staff or faculty director immediately. If the center is closed or you are not with the faculty director, call the emergency numbers provided to you during orientation at the beginning of the program or our main line at 1-800-235-3472. Our staff can contact your parent or guardian. They can also keep your parents posted if you are unable to talk with them yourself.

What if I need to withdraw from the program?

If you need to withdraw from the program before the program begins, please notify us immediately in writing. We must have written notification of your withdrawal. Please refer to SU Abroad’s Refund Policy outlined in the Study Abroad Handbook: https://suabroad.syr.edu/about/cost/refundPolicy

If you are interested in trip cancellation insurance, many companies offer special packages that cover lost or damaged baggage, flight cancellation or delay, and other potential circumstances relating to overseas travel. Please consult your insurance provider for more information.
