International Business Practicum in London

What You Need to Know

This program is designed for upper-level management students. Every effort is made to place you in a position that matches your primary career interests, although this cannot be guaranteed since the mix of sponsors can change from year to year. Some examples of placements may include: Students may be placed in a small but dynamic financial office of a well known children's advocacy NGO, working closely with the Labour party in drafting childcare legislation in the UK. Students may be placed in the risk managment and internal audit office of a large and well known international aid charity. Students may be placed in the finance office of a small, friendly UK Teacher Training charity. Students may work in accounting and stock control for a small but very busy London aid mission for homeless and at risk Londoners.

The program runs for seven weeks. Your work assignment and experience will be unique—but every student gains the invaluable experience of performing meaningful work in a culturally diverse international setting. Final placements are made overseas.

Courses

Students must register for either two courses at three (3) credits each, or one course for six (6) credits. Possible courses are:

Undergraduate Work Experience (BUA 470)
Undergraduate Independent Study (BUA 490)
Graduate Work Experience (BUA 670)
Graduate Independent Study (BUA 690)

Consult with your academic advisor to determine how your choice(s) will fit into your program of study. With permission of that advisor, the BUA designation can be changed to a program-specific designation (for example, MAR, INB, or ACC). Students may not audit these courses.

All students are required to record their daily management activities and document the educational nature of their assignments. A final report is required following the internship. In addition, students registered for independent study credit are required to collect data for and produce a major research paper (30-40 pages).

Eligibility and Requirements

In light of changing immigration requirements, placements in the finance sector will no longer be available for 2008. Internship placements are competitive and admission to this program is based upon the availability of positions that match the student's experience and interest. Please contact SU Abroad for more information.

Participants must have completed at least two years of college in a program that includes management courses. All students should have completed either six credits of accounting at the undergraduate level, or three credits of graduate-level accounting. All interns must demonstrate competence in personal computer word processing and spreadsheet applications (for example, MSWord and Excel).

Although you will be supervised in your internship assignment, you will be expected to take a professional and independent approach to problem-solving and job responsibility.

Travel and Living

Participants arrange and pay for their own transatlantic flights.

Advantage Travel has arranged a group flight for students on this program. We encourage students to travel on the group flight, which includes ground transportation upon arrival. Please review and complete the attached group travel sign-up form to express an interest in being included on the group flight. No payment or commitment is required to complete this form. Summer flights book early, so request your seats now.

Please note that while we encourage students to pursue flight arrangements, we would not encourage you to purchase your airline tickets before confirming that the program and courses you plan to take will be offered in 2008. Please request written notification from us that you can book your flight. You will have to present this notification if we cancel the program at a later date, and you want to be reimbursed for the cost of the ticket.

Students are housed in shared rooms in furnished flats arranged by Syracuse University for the duration of the program. SU Abroad’s pre-arranged housing is located in the heart of the University district, the Bloomsbury neighborhood of London, and a short walk to our London Centre. Students will be required to pay a $400 security deposit. This security will be held to ensure against damage to the apartment. The deposit will be returned after the apartments are cleared and deemed undamaged by Acorn Management Group.

Students who chose to arrange and pay for their own housing must notify SU Abroad by March 15, 2008. The program fee will be reduced for these students. These students should expect to pay about 160 British Pounds (about $313) per week for a shared apartment. They will also be responsible for their own hotel bookings and costs for the first few days of the program while they look for housing. They can contact the Royal National Hotel to pay the hotel directly for their accommodations.

Important Work Permit Information

Students who are not U.S. or Canadian citizens or citizens of the European Union (EU) countries are advised that they may not be eligible to participate in the program unless they are about to obtain a valid United Kingdom work permit. This includes permanent residents of the United States. In addition, citizens of some countries may be required to obtain an entry visa in advance.

Citizens of the EU are automatically eligible to work anywhere in the EU, including the United Kingdom. U.S. citizens (but NOT permanent residents) are eligible to apply for BUNAC student work permit before leaving the U.S. This permit will cost approximately $275. Most major international firms will require you to hold this permit for an internship assignment, paid or unpaid, but some not-for-profit organizations are willing to bypass this requirement.

All students (U.S. citizens, non-U.S. citizens, and permanent residents) are responsible for obtaining and paying for their own United Kingdom work permits.
