What You Need to Know
The College of Engineering at Syracuse University has approved a series of independent study research projects to be conducted at the Institut National des Sciences Appliques in Strasbourg. Research projects are arranged in the major branches of engineering: aerospace, civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical bioengineering, and computer science.
As an engineering intern in Strasbourg, you’ll be placed on a team of doctoral students and faculty. You’ll work as an integral part of this team on a University project and in University laboratories and research centers.
Interested students may request specific information regarding projects for credit pre-approval. Since the projects are ongoing, the nature of work may vary at the time of arrival.
Students must take the Engineering Independent Study credit (e.g. AEE 490 for undergraduates and AEE 690 for graduate credits).
In most accredited B.S. engineering programs in the United States, limited elective credits may be taken as independent study credits. With approval from the major advisor, students could register for courses in the major, for example, aerospace (AEE), civil (CIE), mechanical (MEE), electrical (ELE), computer (CSE), chemical (CEN), bioengineering (BEN), and computer science (CIS).
Language Study
You may also choose to enroll in a three-credit or four-credit French language course. This encourages you to take advantage of living in France and supports additional success in the research project. Students who elect to take a French course will earn a total of six or seven credits—three credits for the engineering course and three or four credits for the French course.
Beginning and intermediate French are four-credit courses, while advanced French is a three-credit course.
Language instruction is provided at the Syracuse University Center in Strasbourg.
John LaGraff Ph.D., Oxford University, is professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the L.C. Smith College of Engineering at Syracuse University. He is the Syracuse University engineering foreign study coordinator. Students are encouraged to contact Professor LaGraff by e-mail: jlagraff@syr.edu.
Eddie Smigiel, Ph.D., is a professor of engineering at the Institut National des Sciences Appliques.
Students will be expected to devote at least 100 hours of work in a supervised laboratory environment, and prepare a comprehensive final written report and, in some cases, prepare an oral report of the work.
Optional Field Trips
There will be guided excursions to the wine country, the medieval city of Colmar, and local castles, arranged by SU Abroad for another SU Abroad summer program in Strasbourg. Engineering students have the option to participate in these trips at an extra cost. The cost of these trips is not included in the engineering program fee. Students who choose this travel opportunity must sign up for all the trips by April 1. The program fee will be increased for these students.
Participants arrange and pay for their own transatlantic flights to Strasbourg.
Advantage Travel specializes in student fares and can assist with flight arrangements for your summer program. For more information, please contact Sally Curtis at scurtis@advantagecny.com or 1-800-788-1980.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not purchase your airline ticket before receiving written notification from us that you can book your flight. You will have to present this notification if we cancel the program at a later date, and you want to be reimbursed for the cost of the ticket.
You’ll be housed in private homes with hosts who provide breakfast and dinner daily, except on weekends when breakfast only is provided.
If you choose to arrange and pay for your own housing, you must notify the SU Abroad office of your decision at the time of application.
