Politics, Communications and Education Internships in Spain

What You Need to Know

This program offers a combination of on-the-job experience and language study for students in business, communications, education, and international relations.

A wide range of internship possibilities is available to qualified students. Previous sponsors included Procter & Gamble, Yahoo Iberia, KPMG Consulting, Plan Internacionale (NGO), El Paisa International Herald Tribune, KLM Airlines, Hotel Tryp Escultor, and Wanadoo (Internet company).

Students should note these aspects of the program:

  • Placements are made in Madrid.
  • Interviews on site are required.
  • Interns must be flexible and responsible about their internship placements.
  • Interns must have a high level of Spanish.

Field Trips

There will be a guided study tour to Toledo. This trip is arranged by SU ABroad and is included in the program fee.

Courses

Some internships require a good working knowledge of Spanish. Students are required to enroll in at least three (3) credits.

Experience Credit
(BUA, 470/SPA 470/IPA 470, 3 credits, undergraduate)

This course provides qualified students internships in areas such as: information technology, advertising and journalism, political science, and business. To be placed in one of these areas, students are required to have the appropriate skills.

Each student is assigned to a selected company, institution, or organization. He or she is expected to carry out the projects assigned by the on-site supervisor and to adhere to the assigned hours. Students meet with their faculty supervisor weekly to report on their progress.

Students must keep a daily journal of their activities as interns, and attend weekly seminars. Grades are based on the on-site supervisor and the SU/Madrid supervisor ratings, along with participation in weekly seminars, a daily journal, and a final report.

Eligibility and Requirements

Participants must have the fundamental background and skills required in their internship preference area. Placements expect interns to be prepared to do the necessary work without training. The internship is an extension of the student's preparation for a career. It is not designed to train students in areas in which they may have an interest but no formal training. Some placements require strong Spanish language skills.

Applicants for a business internship must have completed at least three years of college in a program that includes management courses. Applicants for internships in other areas must have completed at least two years of college and have a strong background in their area of interest.

Applicants are required to submit a resume and cover letter with their application form. The resume should include work experience, relevant course work, and language skills. The cover letter should indicate the student's internship preference.

Specific placements cannot be guaranteed in advance because placements are made after interviews in Spain.

Travel and Living

Students arrange and pay for their own round-trip transatlantic flight to Madrid.

Advantage Travel has arranged a group flight for students on this program. We encourage students to travel on the group flight, which includes ground transportation upon arrival. Please review and complete the attached group travel sign-up form to express an interest in being included on the group flight. No payment or commitment is required to complete this form. Summer flights book early, so request your seats now.

Please note that while we encourage students to pursue flight arrangements, we would not encourage you to purchase your airline tickets before confirming that the program and courses you plan to take will be offered in 2008. Please request written notification from us that you can book your flight. You will have to present this notification if we cancel the program at a later date, and you want to be reimbursed for the cost of the ticket.

Students are housed in private homes with hosts who provide breakfast and dinner. Students who choose to arrange and pay for their own housing must notify the SU Abroad Office of this decision at the time of application.

Students who accept longer internships (those that begin before the program begins or end after the program ends) will have to pay directly for their extended stays.
