FRE447 France from the Revolution to the Great War (Fall)

Taught in French. Starting with the Revolution of 1789, we will study the rise of the French Republic and its recurrent lapses into periods of authoritarian rule, most notably under Napoléon I and Napoléon III. Other major events to be covered include the Revolutions of 1830 and 1848, the construction of France’s colonial empire, the Dreyfus Affair, the Franco-Prussian War, the Belle Epoque, and finally the the First World War.
