SOC367 Sociology of Sport (Fall, Spring)

This course analyses the complex dynamics of the sport industry, based primarily on the sociological approaches of Norbert Elias and Pierre Bourdieu. As a methodological strategy, the model is based on the comparison between European (especially Spanish) and US sport contexts. In each unit, you will use different sociological conceptual tools to analyze several topics: social functions of sport, commercialization of sport, social stratification of sport (social class, gender, ethnicity), sport subcultures, rules in sport, and key ethical debates in sport.

On successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Analyze the complex social dynamics of sport using sociological concepts.
  2. Critically assess different controversial sport topics.
  3. Identify and explain key ethical topics in sport, contextualized by a sociological understanding of the matter.
  4. Propose and conduct ethnographic research on different sport cultures.
  5. Compare European (Spanish, more specifically) and US sport contexts through different topics.
