Taught in Spanish at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica and may not be offered every semester. This course encourages the study and appreciation of Latin American popular music of the twentieth century considering both its aesthetic value and its historical and social relevance. It focuses on the major genres of this music and its most representative musicians; the role of cultural industries in the development of popular music; and historical, social and cultural processes underlying this development.
