TRF560.5 Sets and Sensibilities – From Hollywood to Borehamwood (Spring)

British craft shapes global dreams in unexpected ways. This course explores and contrasts the dynamics of UK, US and international entertainment production with a focus on creative outcomes and cultural practice.

By investigating American, British, and global approaches to moving image production, we examine the creative and cultural processes that influence aesthetic outcomes across film, television, and video games.

With a focus on London, students will uncover the city’s multifaceted role in the entertainment industry bridging arthouse and mainstream. The course will dive into the key role London has in international screen media production. From kitchen sink dramas to Kubrick’s production methods, we’ll analyze how British structure and sensibilities impact global cinema and drive phenomena such as Grand Theft Auto (and Bake-Off). Schedule permitting there will be site visits to provide firsthand insight into the production process and guest speakers.

Students will gain a broad understanding of how contrasting production methods shape creative outcomes; the particular British influence on global entertainment; and the way curiously contradictory elements can create a unique intersection between art and commerce in modern media.

Enrollment priority to Newhouse students and other mass communications majors.
