The course studies the historical and cultural background that led to the emergency of the crime-fiction genre. The course includes writings by the main representatives of the detective fiction whodunit novel and black comedy, such as Poe, Doyle, Chestertone, Christie, Hammet, Chandler, Simenon, and Highsmith. The course includes the study of the main representatives of the crime fiction genre in Europe and Latin America, such as Robbe-Grillet, Durrenmatt, Bernhard, Borges, Garcia Marquez, Vargas Llosa, Piglia, Soriano, Diaz Eterovic, Ampuero, Gomez, Serrano and Rojas. This course analyzes the accounts of (im)migrant voices in Chilean literature. The course includes texts of Arabic, Jewish, and Croatian immigrants, as well as the work of exiled people and/or travelers. Students read tales of immigrants (e.g. Walter Garib, Sonia Guralnik, Nicolas Mihovilovic and Jorge Sherman, referred to family, ethnic, linguistic, and religious memories of diverse cultural groups), tales from exile (e.g. Antonio Skarmeta and Leandro Urbina); tales of adventurers (e.g. Isabel Allende); tales of drifters (e.g. Roberto Bolaños); and tales of indigenous nations (e.g. the voice of the mapuches in Sonia Montecino). El curso analiza los relatos de las voces de emigrantes en la literatura chilena. El curso incluye textos de inmigrantes árabes, judíos y cróatas, y asimismo la obra de gentes exiliadas y/o viajeros. The intention of this course is to explore the relationship between language and social practices, particularly, the relationship between poverty in Chile and its discursive representation in texts. The course follows a theoretical-methodological perspective of the critical analysis of speech. Student will use tools of linguistic analysis that will allow a systematic and rigorous approach to studied texts. La intención de este curso es explorar la relación entre el lenguaje y las prácticas sociales, particularmente, la relación entre la pobreza en Chile y su representación discursiva en los textos. El curso sigue una perspectiva teórico-metodológica del análisis crítico del habla. Los estudiantes usarán instrumentos del análisis lingüístico, los cuales permitirán un enfoque sistemático y riguroso de los textos estudiados. This course studies synchronically and diachronically the Spanish from Chile, at a phonetic, phonologic, lexical, morphologic and syntactic levels. The course has an interdisciplinary approach that combines the dialectology, sociolinguistic, and history of the language. Topics include: History of Spanish in Chile, Synchronic Description of Chilean Spanish, Chilean Linguistic Tradition, and Discursive Practices in Chile. Este curso estudia el español de Chile sincrónica y diacrónicamente en términos de la fonética, la fonología, el léxico, la morfología y la sintaxis. It presents an overview of contemporary literary theory. Topics and authors include: Modernism (Rubén Darío); Vanguardism (e.g. Vicente Huidobro, Pablo Neruda, César Vallejo, Pablo de Rokha); Women and poetry writing (e.g. Gabriela Mistral, Alfonsina Storni, Delmira Agustini, Alejandra Pizarnik); Anti-poetry (Nicanor Parra); Eros, Thanatos and Poetry (Gonzalo Rojas, Armando Uribe); Generations of the 50, 60, and 80. El objetivo del curso es la compresión y apreciación de los rasgos más característicos de los principales movimientos y tendencias de la poesía latinoamericana y chilena desde el modernismo hasta el presente. Muestra un panorama de la teoría literaria contemporánea. This course combines the theory and practice of literary criticism through the analysis of literary, critical, and theoretical texts. Students will able to analyze a text in a critical and creative way from a consistent theoretical perspective. Students will also be able to produce critical texts such as reviews, short essays, and articles. The basis for interpretation of a variety of Ibero-Latin American texts will be the relationship between subjectivity and city from the point of view of cultural, gender, and postcolonial studies. El curso combina la teoría y la práctica de la crítica literaria por medio del análisis de textos literarios, críticos, y teóricos. Los estudiantes podrán analizar un texto crítica e imaginativamente usando una perspectiva teórica coherente. Podrán, también, producir textos críticos tales como reseñas, ensayos cortos y artículos. La base de la interpretación de una variedad de textos iberoamericanos será la relación entre subjetividad y ciudad desde el punto de vista de estudios de la cultura, el género sexual y el poscolonialismo. This course introduces students to the analysis of the Asian region and its relations with Latin America, in particular with Chile. It offers spatial, political, and cultural perspectives on the Asian-Pacific region and Latin America. Students analyze the integration of both regions into the global development process and the comparative advantages that stem from their geographical locations. The course includes the study of Asian political systems (e.g. actors, decision making process, and policies.) Se ofrecen perspectivas espaciales, políticas y culturales sobre la región del Pacifico Asiático y Latinoamérica. The 20th century witnessed a manifestation of modernizing processes in Latin America. The literature of the region raised a voice that for the first time the world could listen with clarity; a voice with the characteristics of a culture that maintains a difficult relationship with modernity. This course reflects on this relationship and incorporates literary analysis in the study of Latin-American culture. El siglo XX sido testigo de una manifestación de procesos modernizadores en la América Latina. La literatura de la región alzó una voz que el mundo pudo oír con claridad por vez primera; una voz con las características de una cultura que mantiene una relación difícil con la modernidad. El curso reflexiona sobre esa relación e incorpora el análisis literario en el estudio de la cultura latinoamericana. Topics include: cultural synthesis, political systems and political participation, integration and modernization, social change economic development, demographic dynamics and territorial challenges, such as migration and urbanization.
